How To Make Sense Of Leader & Tippet Material

RIO Products

In this episode of RIO's "How To" series, RIO brand manager Simon Gawesworth explains how to better understand the different types of leader and tippet materials that are on the market. Simon runs through a number of factors that influence what type of material to use, and explains how materials vary considerably in their construction, their tensile strength and their diameter to strength ratio - something few anglers even consider.

Take two tippet materials of exactly the same diameter - let's say 0.010", with one breaking at 15lb and the other at 8lb. Most anglers would choose the stronger one, but there are many other attributes to be aware of than just strength, and with certain rigs the right choice would actually be the weaker one of those two. RIO's "How To" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique. These educational films are packed with information and top tips designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of all fly fishers. Each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.
