Topher Browne

Portland, ME

No matter how good you get at spey casting, you’re still going to make some casts you don’t want anyone to see.

Waters you call home

Rivers of the Gaspé Peninsula, Quebec, Canada.

Funny Fact

No matter how good you get at spey casting, you’re still going to make some casts you don’t want anyone to see.

BIO

I grew up fishing for pickerel with a singular collection of Dardevle lures. I have no idea how I ended up an Atlantic salmon fishermen.

Angling accomplishments

RIO Ambassador. Sage Ambassador. Eternal student of the game.

Personal beliefs on fly fishing

There is only one rule of salmon fishing: You can’t catch ‘em if your fly is not in the water and swinging in front of fish.

Species you specialize in

Atlantic salmon.

Preferred fishing method

Swinging flies with a 14- or 15-foot rod and a floating line.

Favorite RIO Line

RIO Scandi. All sizes, of course.

Why RIO

I prefer floating lines, and RIO makes the best floating lines, hands down.

Favorite Knot

Clinch knot. First knot I ever learned. Still works.

Special Rigging Techniques

I use the opposite of a clinch knot, the Bimini Twist, when attaching tippets to RIO Versileaders. I sure do like that 100-percent loop in the system when playing a salmon.

Best Fly Fishing Tip

Practice before that big trip to Canada or Russia. If you golf, you’d probably hit a few balls on the range before your tee time at Pebble Beach or St. Andrews.

Parting thoughts

Fish with folks who know more than you do. You’ll always learn something.
