Fly fishing is a journey with no finish line
Waters you call home
Muskegon River, Newaygo
I have 3 naughty Labradors called Piggy, Chicken and Goose.
Born in Cambridge, UK. Grew up the son of an avid outdoorsman who taught me to fly fish as a young lad. Aged 21 I relocated to West Michigan in 1993 to play Rugby for Grand Rapids – I never went back! Soon discovered the wonderful fishing in Michigan and became addicted to fly fishing, especially spey casting and swinging flies.
I was one of the first guys in the East to obtain the IFFF Masters and THCI casting instructor certificates.
Personal beliefs on fly fishing
I love catching fish but there has to be more to it than that to be a fly angler. For me it’s the beautiful places it takes us and being outside in nature. I am always learning new things and evolving as an angler. I love spending quality time with friends and family and meeting new people along the way. It’s a journey with no finish line.
Species you specialize in
Preferred fishing method:
Spey casting and swinging flies
Favorite RIO Line
Sandi Versi Tip system
I have great respect for Simon Gawesworth and feel privileged to be part of the RIO team. They have such a complete selection of lines, tippet and accessories – especially love RIO Spey gear.
The good old Clinch knot, and the Rapala Loop knot.
Special Rigging Techniques
Not really, but I love the Intermediate Scandi bodies - it is a very fishy line system, especially for Great Lakes steelhead.
Best Fly Fishing Tip
Fish a great short line, rather than a poor long line.
Find a mentor, or two. I have had several along the way. To the guys who helped me, I owe a tremendous debt of thanks.
