Chasing Salmon Flies

Early summer in eastern Idaho means one thing if you Fly Fish….It’s Salmon Fly time. Here at RIO, we foam at the mouth just as much as everyone else when these flying chunks of protein start to appear. Being a short drive from the Henry’s Fork puts a lull in our productivity for about a week as pounding the banks with big flies takes priority. Driving down the highway this time of year it’s not uncommon to see more cars towing drift boats than not. Being in the middle of our busiest season doesn’t help, but somehow we make due!

The Salmon Fly hatch is usually a “Be here now” sort of deal as it can be highly volatile, thus when things started happening this year we dropped what we were doing, grabbed our brand new RIO Perception lines, and headed up river. Fishing was good for a couple of days on our particular favorite stretch, and the RIO crew, along with some friends, were able to drag some big browns out from the banks. We were particularly excited on the ultra low-stretch characteristic of the RIO Perception line, as it excelled at solidly sticking fish who grabbed at long distances. Keep an eye out for the Perception at your local RIO dealer soon.

For now it’s back to the grind for the RIO team, that is until the South Fork starts fishing…Enjoy some photos from the recent action!
